Pat & Charles Welcome You To their Grade II quintessential Old English Teashop.    Proprietors 2007 Р2019
The Old Thatch was initially built in 1690 as two or three fishermans cottages and it is believed to be the oldest building in Shanklin. By 1940, after being used by various other businesses, it was transformed into a Teashop and over the years has metamorphosed into the beautiful Teashop you see today. Underneath the Old Thatch is an original tunnel which takes you about 500 meters further on towards Ventnor to the Mead. The tunnel was used by the Fishermen/Pirates to hide their contraband and as a get-a-way when Custom & Excise came knocking on the door because, of course, in those days Tourism was not the main source of income for the Island. We have three thatched roofs and they are all water resistant and warm. Nowadays they are made of reed and last for approximately 35 years. The ridges are made of straw because it bends easily and that is where the Thatcher puts his individual signature. Remember not to stand under a Thatch when it rains as you will notice there is no guttering and you might have a shower that you did not bargain for. We know of no official Ghost BUT there have been many sightings from both Staff and Customers of a beautiful lady who wonders through our rooms checking everything is up to standard.
